Stop it, Muse!
Music

So. Muse have created an album that not only rips off everything  (including even Muse themselves) but is also cheesy, pretentious, overblown, distasteful, arguably racist, and, most importantly, terrible. Here’s how it breaks down:

  1. "Uprising"
This boring song steals from Doctor Who and repeats its one lacklustre theme relentlessly. Lyrics of vague conspiracy ironically only serve to brainwash the millions of Muse followers into thinking they're somehow in league with the band. They’re not on your side, they just want your money.
  2. "Resistance"
A promising intro (complete with Baywatch drums) unfortunately leads into a cheesy bridge/chorus double team of disastrous songwriting. “Love is our resistance” is a definite contender for worst lyric of the year.
  3. "Undisclosed Desires"
Apparently imitating some terrible corporate pop cash cow, this song is a distasteful outing into club music from what used to be one of the hardest rocking British bands on the island. Embarrassing but not as much as what’s to come...
  4. "United States Of Eurasia"
More non-specific conspiracy lyrics (“you and me fall in line / to be punished for unproven crimes!”) and vocal harmonies borrowed from Queen with a generic "eastern" string section (surely the closest music can come to racism). Ignorant and uninspired.
  5. "Guiding Light"
Beginning promisingly with thundering drums (the beat is stolen from Ultravox), two bars later all hope is lost. The rest of the song is whispy pop dirge that sounds like U2 and goes nowhere.
  6. "Unnatural Selection"
The album’s first glimpse of a riff (an unimpressive re-hash of 'New Born'). Again, non-specific lyrics (“They’ll laugh as they watch us fall / They don’t care at all”) and chants attempt to win over listeners to cover for shoddy songwriting. At almost seven minutes it is overlong and the boring middle section is completely unnecessary. 'Citizen Erased' this is not.
  7. "MK Ultra"
Worst title ever? Ironically the best song on the album. No new ideas in Muse world but this wouldn’t have been out of place on Absolution (as one of the dodgy tracks towards the end). Unfortunately, this song only sounds good by comparison because there’s nothing glaringly awful about it.
  8. "I Belong to You/Mon Cœur S’ouvre à ta Voix"
The title should be able to give you an idea of how bad this song is. The only redeeming factor for this crock of shit is that you will listen to it more than once simply because it makes you laugh.
  9. "Exogenesis Symphony: Overture"
Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer are next in line for fraud. The string arpeggios are over-stretched, obvious and grating and this meandering orchestral outing goes absolutely nowhere.
  10. "Exogenesis Symphony
Cross Pollination" Is that you, middle-section from 'Butterflies and Hurricanes'? Oh, no it’s your bloated, obese twin. Who’s that behind you? Oh, more conspiracy lyrics and Muse stereotypes. The second half of this track is relatively tasteful despite being full of saturated old ideas.
  11. "Exogenesis Symphony: Redemption"
The bastardisation of Beethoven’s 'Moonlight Sonata' is a fitting end to this album. Failed ambitious attempts to plagiarise are now Muse’s weapon of choice.

Muse have dropped the ball. Not that they haven’t been fumbling it for a while. Their success has robbed them of the urgency which, it turns out, is what made them good. Matt Bellamy has decided that he can do anything and should do everything and as such the whole album is overstretched between unrealised and stolen ideas. I dearly hope that Muse will retire now and save us from their ever-more degrading attempts at songwriting.

"a generic "eastern" string section (surely the closest music can
come to racism)"

What an idiotic comment! By this logic all of rock music
is racist, as it is based upon black blues music.

Although, more interestingly,
this implies that the reviewer believes all music should be segregated into
cultural backgrounds with no intermixing. Which is itself a...well.. racist
view.

Quoting your fellow reviewer:
making grand unsubstantiated claims about how
terrible a band is just makes for very poor criticism, doesn’t it? (Calum
Barnes article on The Beatles)

I agree the album is very disappointing.
However, this is not a review. You mention 'shoddy songwriting' - in what way?
How is the song 'boring'? 'They're not on your side, they just want your money',
point made, where is your backup?

And I fully agree with Mark. 'Racist' is not
a term to use carelessly.

Agree with Mark. This is an crude, ignorant review with little objective
relevance. I'm amazed that such a cry for attention was printed...

Most useless 'review' of anything ive ever read, what a disgrace to use the word
racist, get a life and come back when you have even got cloe to something as
amazing as the resistance
