A History of the Brain is a 10-part podcast series that takes you on a 5000 year journey into the brain. The series will play on BBC Radio 4 Extra.
The opener, A Hole in the Head is filled with facts: the brain is the most elaborate object in the universe, has 1 billion nerve cells, the same as the number of trees in the Amazon rainforest. The focus of the episode: trepanation. Weirdly, there is loads of evidence that people believed holes in the skull help treat physiological or spiritual problems. Whilst packed full of content, it’s safe to say that this series is lacking in the entertainment department. I can also appreciate this is a quality, scientific podcast.
If you find yourself at a loose end, have a genuine interest in this aspect of the human anatomy and would like to know some unusual facts about its history, give it a listen.
