Badminton make a racquet in the latest sports round-up

The Edinburgh University Badminton Club Ladies 1s played against Loughborough University 1s on Wednesday. Despite fighting hard in the singles matches, the 1s sadly lost both games. However, the doubles team ended on a fantastic note, with Edinburgh winning three out of four matches.

Edinburgh University Basketball Club Women’s 1s had a tough game against Newcastle University 1s, however they triumphed with an incredibly tight score of 75-74. The Men’s 2s remain the only undefeated team in their league following a 63-48 win at home against Dundee University 1s. Women’s 2s had a tough defeat this week against Glasgow University 1s, 54-39, and finally, the Men’s 3s lost 63-27 against the strong opposition of Dundee University 3s.

Edinburgh University Archery Club’s compound, novice and senior teams all gained a comfortable win at the last Scottish Student Sport league match. Also, the results for the Scottish Archery Association Under 21 and Novice Championships are out, which saw several club members bringing back gold for their respective categories.

There were lots of snow related cancellations for Edinburgh University Women’s Hockey Club this week. The 1s experienced views of a winter wonderland as they travelled down south to triumph 3-2 against Nottingham University 1s on Wednesday. The 2s put in a superb performance, returning with an impressive score of 6-2 against Strathclyde University 1s. And finally, the 4s finished with a 1-1 draw after a tough game against St Andrews University 1s.

There were disappointing results for Edinburgh University Men’s Hockey Club this week. The 2s lost 6-0 against the side top of the BUCS Scottish 1A league, the University of the West of Scotland. The 3s were unable to convert their few chances against Heriot-Watt University 1’s, succumbing 4-0. And finally, the 4s faced a tough match against Strathclyde University 1s finishing with a score of 7-1.

Elsewhere there were mixed results for Edinburgh University Ladies Rugby Football Club. The 1s prevailed with a strong score of 22-0 against Durham University 1s, whilst the 2s experienced their first loss of the season at home to a strong Robert Gordon University 1s side. Despite putting up a great fight, the score finished 50-0.

Edinburgh University Netball Club entered two teams in The Scottish Cup last Saturday. The 1s clinched second place with an impressive three wins out of three. EUNC 2s also played in the cup, with a team made up of players from the 2s, 3s and 4s. The 2s finished with two wins and one loss taking 11th place. The 4s played against Napier University 1s on Monday night, unfortunately finishing with a 54-39 loss. The 6s finished with a cracking score of 52-19 against Aberdeen University 3s, and the 7s dominated 51-10 against Heriot-Watt University 3s.

This week Edinburgh University Women’s Lacrosse Club 2s faced old rivals, Glasgow University 1s. It was a tight match, but the 2s triumphed with a score of 10-7. The 3s played St Andrews University 2s away. The match was incredibly well fought by the 3s, levelling the score at 11-11 at the final whistle.

Over the course of a weekend the Edinburgh University Fencing Club Women’s 1s competed in matches against Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham and St Andrews Universities. With some fantastic individual performances and the foil team only losing 40 points over all matches, Edinburgh came away with four decisive victories. This places the 1s three points clear at the top of the Premier League with five matches to play.

Last Saturday saw the Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds Running Club compete in the National Short Course XC Championships. Collective efforts meant the Women’s team placed 5th overall and the Men’s team 4th overall.

And finally, the Edinburgh University Triathlon club competed in the Aberdeen University King’s Aquathlon last weekend. The club competed in both long and short course races. EUTri had an incredibly successful day achieving a wealth of medals.
