The City of Edinburgh Council is set to declare a housing emergency.

A motion calling on the council to make the declaration has been tabled by Councillor Jane Meagher, the Housing Convener, and will be discussed at the council meeting being held this evening, 2 November.

The motion comes in light of calls from Shelter Scotland for the council to declare a state of emergency.

5000 people are currently homeless in Edinburgh and private rent prices have seen the highest increase anywhere in the United Kingdom at 13.7%.

The housing emergency declaration would establish a Housing Emergency Action Plan in collaboration with Shelter. The council will also write to the First Minister, the Deputy First Minister, the Housing Minister and the Secretary for Social Justice, to seek additional resources.

The motion is expected to receive cross party support and would make Edinburgh the first council in Scotland to declare an emergency.

Speaking to The BBC the Charity Shelter Scotland said the motion would be: “an important moment in the fight against housing injustice in Edinburgh”.
