Jorja Smith’s new track is good casual company

Jorja Smith’s gorgeous vocals meet Popcaan’s energising dancehall in the new single ‘Come Over’. The romantic allure of Smith’s voice casts a charm as soon as the song begins, taking the lead from the elegant sounds of her 2018 album Lost and Found. But this new single is more than just a chic ballad: the lyrics express an annoyance over dating mind games, and Popcaan’s verse perks up the song with a different yet complementary tone.

This is definitely a fun single – something to dance to whilst cooking – and in this way, it follows on from Smith’s recent pop single ‘Be Honest’. While it’s less likely to be your go-to crying song, as ‘The One’ or ‘Let Me Down’ might have been, it is certainly not bad company on the walk to the library. Smith has also released an animated music video, something that more artists have turned to during the pandemic. Its neon colour palette illuminates the contemporary resonance of the song, and subtle but powerful Black Lives Matter messaging continues the more grave implications of her last music video ‘By Any Means’. All in all, Smith’s new single continues her consistent streak in injecting interesting quirks to the modern pop genre.
