Oct 25, 2016

What begins as an idyllic fairy-tale romance between a young English soldier named Eric and his Irish sweetheart, Phyllis, soon becomes a captivating insight into the harsh realities of the First World War and the effect it had on everyone involved.

Love Letters from the Front was originally a book compiled of the letters the couple wrote to one another while Eric fought in France with the Royal Field Artillery, which were found years later by Jean Kelly, a relative of Phyllis.

The adaptation of this love story has been beautifully portrayed by Ruari Tohill and Roisin Gallagher, two very talented actors from Belfast, and has been produced by Ian Dougan. With daily excerpts broadcasted just before noon each day on BBC Radio Ulster – beginning in April of this year, so some catching up is necessary – this is a must-listen, as it is the perfect combination of romance and tragedy. More charming than any Tinder love story, you will be left thinking about this romance long after it is over.
