Rihanna, Kanye West, Paul McCartney

Twistedly, fans of Kanye West took to their keyboards this month to express their adoration for him “shining light on new artists”, after West released a track with Paul McCartney. Now that they have all been sufficiently educated and acquainted with the former Beatle, the duo have collaborated again, this time with Rihanna, in what was genuinely one of the most pleasant musical surprises in a long time. Contrary to those unspeakable online comments, McCartney, despite not providing the vocals, is the loudest voice on ‘FourFiveSeconds’. It is his style that both Rihanna and Kanye humbly acquiesce to; West sings rather than raps, and there is a notable absence of Rihanna’s usual supporting dance beats and back up vocals. The song is totally stripped back, acoustic and almost country in genre – a complete and refreshing riposte to those who lament today’s stars as talentless. Believe it or not, classic and current are in total harmony here.
