Tomorrow’s Food

Come one, come all, to the circus of what our future food will look like. Tomorrow’s Food is a fascinating yet scary look at how our future eating will be decided. Hosted by Dara Ó Briain, the show covers a futuristic look at food that is not as far off as we think.

We follow Dr Shini Somara’s visit to Japan to see how their attempts at futuristic eating are now portrayed. This covers meals being delivered and made by robots in a somewhat unrealistic set up, that even Somara herself mentions is not the future but a fad that will run out.

She then visits a venue – the location of which is mysteriously witheld – where they create a room to encourage and enhance your senses while eating. By this I mean using waves and the smell of sea salt when eating oysters. However this is only enjoyed by the elite, as it is 400 pounds a meal and there are 23 of them! So maybe this is an insight into how the rich may start eating.

Chris Bavin, who knows his greens (and who actually is a green-grocer), shows us the future of convenience food. We are shown a vending machine pizza, which lets you watch as it makes your pizza in just three minutes. This makes me feel unsure about eating such a creation, as three minutes in an infra-red oven is not something that is particularly attractive to me.

Ó Briain takes us up high into the clouds to explain the Texans’ scientific way of making rain clouds produce more rain, and down low where we see tomato plants being produced with no soil. This look at how we need to change our environment and living conditions for plants to be able to grow is curious yet scary.

Although we now know that the resources we have are not enough, the show touches on how soon we will run out of basics such as wheat, and how this idea of future food will actually be the food we will need to  survive, feeding the crazy amount of people on planet Earth.
