Strikes confirmed: UCU Edinburgh votes ‘yes’ to continuing strikes

On Wednesday 20th September, UCU Edinburgh announced that the Edinburgh branch will take part in strike dates scheduled for next week.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, UCU Edinburgh announced that 56 per cent of voters selected ‘yes’ to continuing the strike.

The announcement follows a vote by members of the University and College Union in Edinburgh on Tuesday 19th September.

The vote responded to the question ‘Do you wish to continue with the five days of national strike action from 25-29 September?’

Strike dates were called by the UCU for the 25th to 29th September earlier this month.

The post stated that 1,076 total votes were cast.

Of these, 602 voted yes and 399 voted no.

A further 75 abstained from the vote.

UCU Edinburgh previously recommended their members opt out of action scheduled for September, following a joint statement made with the University of Edinburgh in August.

The statement released on 4th August announced that the university had agreed to pause pay deductions for staff taking part in the marking and assessment boycott.

Acknowledging the disruption industrial action had caused to students, the statement said: “This period of relative calm will allow all staff to return to working normally”.

Nationwide the dispute between UCU members and the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) over pay and conditions remains ongoing.

The planned strike days already have some local variations, with various institutions taking extra strike days over issues specific to their regions.

In Scotland, additional strike days are being taken by the University of Stirling and the University of Aberdeen due to punitive pay deductions for members who took part in the MAB.

The University of Aberdeen has taken four additional strike days, the 18th – 21st September.

The University of Stirling has taken ten additional strike days (11th – 15th and 18th – 22nd September).
